Champlain Safari Chair
Blue Gum Design
The Champlain Chair in veg tan leather and local white ash is our take on the iconic safari chair. Why Safari Chairs? Well, they are light. Made with good materials, they are virtually indestructible and so functional. The original concept was to create a structure that was easy (for your servant) to knock down and reassemble in the field with no tools.
In the years that this chair is in your home it will slowly shape itself around you. It has the unmistakable creak of quality leather, looks beautiful and even smells superb. And, yes, it is as comfortable as it is cool.
When you sit in a safari, the seat, arms and back, and the rope suspension all act under tension to keep the whole structure taut, stable and in place. It’s brilliant. The bit of ‘give’ solves the final design challenge—a chair that adapts to uneven ground. There were dozens of mid-century variations on these chairs, and two versions found their way into Trent University.
The Champlain Chair is our take on the leather safari chair, hand-crafted in Canada with local white ash and European veg-tanned leather. Don't let the light, airy design fool you. This chair is comfortable enough to lounge in for hours. It ships flat and goes together in a matter of minutes. Easy to care for, this comfortable, practical and luxurious chair will last for generations.
